At the base of an event is a great idea. Straightforward and memorable. For Elfia this is summed up in: "You'll never dream alone".Together we dream. Together we create. Beyond the limits of our imagination. Together we give expression to those dreams, and we share it; because we all want to share our dreams.
It all started in 1994. TV scriptwriter Stefan Struik just finished an interview with a meditating hermit in Baarn (Netherlands) who complained about gnomes disrupting the electricity network in his house. A month later, he literally bumped against several trolls in a Norwegian clothing store in the Frisian town of Dokkum. A year before he had been amazed at the wide range of meters high garden gnomes in Poland, just across the border with Germany. It all seemed to draw a new path that he would target a few months later. In December 1994, he opened with his sister Helena a small game and book shop in Delft, called the Elf Fantasy Shop. It all proved to be a golden opportunity. Three years later, the duo was able to open a second store in The Hague. Around the millennium was followed by two other stores in Rotterdam and Utrecht.
In 1995, Stefan also launched a free magazine called Elf Fantasy Magazine. In 2001, the magazine was professionalized, and although the magazine never was able to realize a profit, it remained there until 2009.
For several years, Stefan and his sister Helena organized in their stores lectures on druidism, Tolkien, and other great topics. In 2001, Stefan decided to combine some business in an entirely new and unique festival concept that would later be copied many times: the Elf Fantasy Fair. Begun in the historical theme park Archeon (NL), the following year it moved to the largest castle in the Netherlands: Kasteel de Haar (Haarzuilens). The Elf Fantasy Fair has always remained in Haarzuilens except in 2004 when the event temporarily moved for one year to Castle Keukenhof in Lisse. In 2009, Stefan and his team launched a second version of the Elf Fantasy Fair, 400 meters away from the German border in the small village of Arcen in North Limburg. In January 2013 the name Elf Fantasy Fair ™ was replaced by Elfia ™. The spring edition of Elfia is also called the 'light edition,' while the autumn edition is characterized as the 'dark edition'.

Elfia (Formerly Elf Fantasy Fair) is a festival, concentrated around the expression of dreams. Costumes are the most obvious way to shape these dreams. Often they are inspired by the clothes of characters from TV shows, movies or comics. But we also go beyond costumes alone: drawings, paintings, music, photography, body art, vehicles, these are all opportunities to express your dreams.
